Remembering a Local Legend: Leslie Beck
It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that we come to terms with the devastating news of the passing of Leslie Beck on Thursday, 25th June. Leslie passed away on the bridge between Penpont and Keir—a physical link between the communities he spent his life bringing together.
Over the last few days, a quiet shockwave has rippled through our community. As the news settles, it has brought with it an overwhelming wave of love, grief, and shared memories. Leslie was a true local legend, though he was far too modest to ever truly realise just how deeply loved and appreciated he was. He touched the hearts and minds of almost everyone he met, leaving an irreplaceable void in our community.
Whenever there was an activity, a village event, or someone in need of support, Leslie was usually first in line to lend a helping hand. He expected no recognition; he simply loved being useful and seeing his community thrive.
In recent years, Leslie found great joy working away on outdoor tasks that kept our community and green spaces beautiful and moving forward. He was a vital, familiar presence up at the Hydro Scheme, working tirelessly down in the community garden, and meticulously looking after his beloved chickens otherwise known as the “garden girls.” Whether he was happily in charge of the lawnmower or maintaining the community e-bikes, Leslie approached every task with dedication and a quiet pride.
Of course, Leslie was a man of action who took real pride in the work, and he certainly didn’t mince his words or his actions when it came to getting a job done properly. There were times he would grow thoroughly frustrated with us, especially if we were yittering or laughing instead of just getting on with the task at hand. If we tried to offer our own ideas or problem-solve, Leslie would sometimes cross his arms and even stomp off in exasperation. Yet, without fail, he would always come back—ready, willing, and utterly focused, usually with the perfect solution in mind to crack on with the job.
Leslie’s industrious spirit, his authentic character, his kindness, and his unwavering willingness to help define the very best of Keir, Penpont, and Tynron. He will be missed beyond measure, but he will always be remembered for the true local legend that he was.
Our thoughts, love, and deepest condolences go out to Leslie’s family, friends, and everyone who holds him dear during this incredibly difficult time.
Rest in Peace: Oor Leslie.

  1. Leslie, I am struggling to find the words because your absence leaves such an immense void. You poured your whole heart into everything you did, giving 100% to every single deed without ever asking for anything in return. I only wish you could see just how much you truly meant to all of us. You are completely irreplaceable, and your memory will live on in every life you touched. I’ll certainly be lost for a long time without you being here to keep me right.
